my memories were made 20 years ago in the hands and feet of my mum weaves together the memories of my mother’s early life in Australia after migration, that is found within small tasks of everyday labour. The installation is informed by conversations and actions performed during the creation of the work, as my mother and I prepare a ‘thit kho’, a culturally and personally significant dish. Together we revisit the past through the passing of oral histories from mother to daughter.
Translation:
‘Mum is almost always cooking 3 different dishes at the same time. She creates a mess and I get angry at the mess in the kitchen and go “argh why is there water on the floor” and then wipe up the water with the old t-shirt on the ground.’
‘My parents sold fruits and veggies for most of their life. First, it was at a market and then at a store. Me and my sister grew up in these fruit stores. We would play amongst the foam boxes and take rides in the forklift with Dad, watching as my mum’s white gloves turned yellow from touching the fruit.
At home, we played in the backyard, next to the big orange tree until it was dark and we had to run away from the mosquitoes. By then, mums made dinner and we eat and wait until we can have orange juice. Mum stabs an orange with a straw, and we have one each.’
‘Thank you (lots of love)’
