chopsticks and spoons fall to the beat of temple drums is a personal project, started as a means to reclaim family history and stories, and to acknowledge connections within family. A Buddhist refuge tree structure, commonly used to display lineages of knowledge between teachers of religion, is subverted to map family genealogy and lineages of teachings through generations. Diary-like entries from various family members border the pieces, reflecting on upbringing and also revealing experiences of loss and trauma connected to a history of migration. The imagery and motifs present imaginations of the past and reference to my personal memories of upbringing as an Australian mixed ethnic individual.
