Monica Trieu is an Australian-born emerging artist of Teochew-Vietnamese descent, born and raised on unceded Dharug and Gadigal land, and currently residing in Tokyo, Japan. Her practice engages with ethnic traditions as a means to break down connections between westernised upbringings and losses of cultural ties. With an interest in memories and personal histories, she revisits past familial events to conjure imaginary visions of home in an attempt to make sense of the past, and find clarity within struggles of the present. She also uses cultural text and language habitually across her practice, as a form of interrogating diasporic identities, and moreover as tender offerings of love. Through her practice, she hopes to facilitate cultural healing, and strengthen understanding between individuals.
